Beer ham is a true classic at the German deli counter, and has been for generations. Its name is somewhat misleading: there's no beer in this sausage at all. The term refers instead to the tradition of enjoying this hearty cold cut with a cold beer, whether as part of a traditional German snack, in a beer garden, or simply as a substantial bite-sized treat. It's precisely this popularity and down-to-earth charm that we wanted to capture in our neck roll.
What makes our large beer ham neck roll special: It's designed differently at each end, just like a real sausage at the counter. On one side, the casing is classically tied by hand with a cord, while on the other side, a detailed cross-section in delicate pink shows two-toned pieces of ham, as if someone had just cut off the first slice.
The casing itself is terracotta-colored and made of a soft cotton sweatshirt fabric that deceptively replicates the typical sausage skin while feeling pleasantly cozy. Inside is a sturdy foam cylinder, additionally covered with a fine mesh, for the characteristic, slightly grained texture found on a real beer ham sausage.
Whether on the sofa, in bed or simply as decoration on the shelf, this neck roll is a couch delicacy for all those who like to lean against one of Germany's favorite sausage varieties as much as they like to eat it.
